Well, I am apparently not only supposed to be able to split hairs... but also state the obvious.

At times, the blindingly obvious...

Since I'm apparently supposed to assume the examiners and markers are stupid and have zilch knowledge of Law...

Though at times, I really do wonder if that's the case...

Sigh...

You know something has gone wrong somewhere when while reading your notes, you come across something that's not in the syllabus and promptly exclaim, "Oh look... it's not in the official syllabus... then there's a chance they'll set a question on it!!!"

Urgh... Demmit...

My V Plus keeps hanging whenever I try to listen to it while it's charging... And it's so much trouble resetting it because I have to remove the skin and poke it with a needle... (Hrmm, I just realise it actually sounds weird... )

Nothing goes wrong when I leave it alone while it's charging... And thing about my V Plus is, it switches itself on and off while charging... But when I put the earphones on, it hangs after a few seconds...

Demmit!

It's always such fun meeting up with old friends... Some of whom you haven't seen in yoinks... I would say roughly about 5 years-ish?

Pretty much what we did was sit around and gossip... oh and drift towards where the food was! Great tiramisu, Charl... and whoever brought the brownies, double thumbs-up!

It's good to see everyone again, though it still feels like the gathering is a lot smaller than what it used to be... and just find out wheres, whats and whatnots of the things people are up to.

There, In That Silence

It was his battle, yet he never hurt me, and he could have.

Ah, sometimes... silence is all we have. When we want to say something but can't. When we hurt, but don't have the words to voice it with.

And in the end, when too many things are unsaid, you're just locked in an endless cycle of pain that you just don't know how to end, nor how it even started in the first place...

To hurt and want to reach for comfort but just not having the means to... Ah, silence...

Hope For The Best, Prepare For The Worst

Posted by eirene83 at 02:11 AM on July 6, 2007.

I really shouldn't have anything to complain about... I'm young and healthy; have a university education... I'm with people that I love and who love me in return. I can afford to go out and buy anything that catches my eye; food on the table, roof over my head...

And yet... Me being the person that I am, there always seem to be one thing or another that I'll find to pick about...

Preparing for the CLP, I've been wondering what to do should I not pass. Again. Technically, I shouldn't complain... I have a degree, I'll find a job somehow... But thinking about it, not many people would want to hire a lawyer who can't go to Court. Pretty useless, don't you think? Might as well hire someone who can attend Court...

So... here I am, hoping for the best to pass CLP... and preparing for the worst, should I not...

Yet, my supposed worst is still better off than others, people would say. You have a degree, they'll cry... Someone somewhere will want to hire you...

And then I wonder, if life really is just that simple...

Want A Good Ride?

Posted by eirene83 at 03:43 PM on July 6, 2007.

"Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways - Chardonnay in one hand - chocolate in the other – body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming "WOO HOO, What a Ride!!"
Unfortunately, to be able to afford both Chardonnay and good quality chocolate... I still need a pretty good, well-paying job...

For which I pretty much damn need to pass the CLP...

I currently feel like I'm juggling a dozen razor-sharp knives in mid air... And I just can't wait to start discarding them, one by one...

Which I suspect is how most of the CLP students are currently feeling right now. Can't wait for the bloody exams to start so we can start striking them off, one by one...

Unfortunately at the same time, thing about juggling razor-sharp knives is that one wrong move right now can have all those knives falling and you can pretty much just wave goodbye to everything...

Sigh...

Can't wait for it to start... Yet at the same time, don't really want it to start...

Missed...

Posted by eirene83 at 02:17 AM on July 9, 2007 in Personal.

Everybody has their moment of great opportunity in life.
If you happen to miss the one you care about, then everything else in life becomes eerily easy.

Have been skimming through Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy these few weeks... Lol, yea I should be studying but just for a bit of relaxation...

Anyway, thing about studying was it got me to thinking... I've definitely made a few wrong choices in my past... And missed some opportunities that still have me kicking myself...

But you know, all things considered... I feel that just because I missed those few opportunities, made some not too few wrong choices... I don't think that it makes where I am right now in life, as wrong...

It's kinda like driving. Just because you took some wrong turns here and there... doesn't mean that the whole journey was wrong... Or that your destination isn't the one meant for you.

So yeah... I could have done things a whole lot differently... but I still like where I am right now, and the people with me.

There's so many recipes I've highlighted... but somehow I just can't quite get into the baking mood. Unlike some people who even in the midst of exams, find baking relaxing.. In the run-up to the exam weeks, I can't concentrate on anything else other than studying and the usual other stuff... Like sleeping, getting my laundry done... Eating maybe...

That, plus there's way too much to eat in the house...

Augh... Dammit... Bake, bake, bake, bake, bake!

Funny...

Posted by eirene83 at 05:40 PM on July 11, 2007.

Not in the funny amusing sort of way...

But anyway, what's funny is that... most of the legal professionals I've come across... all tell me that the Bar is easier than the CLP... And that some of the questions just don't make sense.

And that if I failed, it wasn't me... It's was the CLP

Nicee...

It's a sort of comfort... but a cold one... Since the fact would still remain that I did fail...

Cheating

Posted by eirene83 at 05:59 PM on July 11, 2007 in Thoughts as a favorite post.

I was reading this article in a women's magazine today, the gist of which was the author had a sort of online affair for close to 2 years whilst engaged. Affair as in constantly messaging/mailing the guy; turning to him when she needed someone to talk to... That sort of thing.

Which got me to thinking. People make this big deal when they catch their other halves with well, someone else... In bed, at the pub, on the dance floor... I mean, that's cheating... But isn't emotional cheating even worse? Because hugging, kissing, sex... Well, it's sex... Or rather, it's just sex. 2 bodies together for a night or so... Yes, it's bad; it's hurtful; it's a betrayal and all those other things you can think of.

But being dependant on someone else emotionally...
Part of being in a relationship is that the person is there for you when you need them. They're supposed to be your support, your anchor. Sharing problems. To support and be supported. When you love and are in love with someone... that's what you want, isn't it? To share their joys and burdens?

So when you start turning to someone else when you're sad, lonely, need someone to talk to... Isn't that just as bad, or maybe even worse than cheating physically? Because you're sharing with someone else things that should be between you and your other half? Leaning on someone else and asking for their support... Creating this world that your partner is kept out of...

Anyway... I guess my point is... Actually... I don't have a point Just wanted to fire away about this for a while, really... Just remembering "Love Actually" and the part towards the end when Emma Thompson confronts Alan Rickman:
"Imagine your husband bought a gold necklace and come Christmas gave it to somebody else... Would you wait around to find out if it's just a necklace, or if it's sex and a necklace, or if worst of all it's a necklace and love?"

That's the thing, isn't it? If it's sex... Well, it's bad but in the end, it's just sex. But turning to someone else when you're down and need someone to be there... Holding back from your partner but sharing with someone else... Something your partner might never know you were going through or thinking about... That's going to cut much deeper...

Oy Vey!

Posted by eirene83 at 02:34 AM on July 13, 2007.

I'm losing hair!!

Well, so much for drama... What's actually been going on is more along the lines of wake up, sweep hair from pillow; brush hair, remove hair from brush; sit down and study... and after an hour, get up and pick up stray hairs from the floor... and repeat after another hour. Not to mention all the hairs when I shampoo!

I wonder if it's the normal rate (100 to 125 hairs per day apparently) but I haven't been counting... Lol, I just hope it's normal... and I'm just noticing it since I'm sitting down more nowadays than walking around. That or it's not normal... but will be just fine as soon as my exams are over.

Déjà Vu

Posted by eirene83 at 02:42 AM on July 13, 2007 in Thoughts, Personal.

Just remembered some stuff earlier... Someone once told me, "Michelle, stop making excuses for me!".

Really random actually... But to paint a clearer picture without saying too much, it was more of I was upset because of some things... but I knew that it couldn't be helped and that there were other priorities. So although I was upset... I couldn't and didn't let myself be angry... Because I realised that people try their best and sometimes it's really just not their fault...

Which ended up with me making excuses for them... even when I was upset.
Which led to me trying my best to not let the negative emotions out because I understood (but as we all know, understanding doesn't always mean being able to be accepting)...
Which led to being told that I did have to the right to be angry and upset... And to stop making excuses for others when they weren't even trying to make excuses for themselves.

.

.

Oh and the other bit of stuff that I remembered? Another person told me, "Michelle... You give too much of yourself. And in the end, you're not going to have anything left to give."

I love Malaysia... I really do. But there are just some things that I don't think I'll ever be able to understand.

Like, this is VMY 2007 right? Visit Malaysia year, bring in the tourists, show the world that Malaysia is capable of being world-class? So... isn't it embarrassing when things like cabbies fleecing visitors for a short, simple cab ride happen? Flights being overbooked?

Or when the authorities do resurfacing works in the name of trying to make things look good for VMY 2007... In the year 2007??

Why, in the name of all that is good and sensible, are we trying to improve things in the same year we are trying to impress people?? Shouldn't that have been done before we started the whole Visit Malaysia Year?

Imagine telling tourists, "Oh yes, we are trying to encourage more tourists... And on our left is the famous street for night markets. It's not open just yet, since we're trying to do improvement work on the roads. Come back in a few months..."???

I don't know about you all... but I'm just getting a little tired with brushing things off with, "Oh well... That's Malaysia."

Oversaturated

Posted by eirene83 at 03:00 AM on July 19, 2007.

I remember there was this point last year when my friends and I studied so much that by the time we had to sit for our first paper, we were so sick and tired of words we felt like puking...

I suppose it's hard to believe that anyone can study so much to read the point of saturation and beyond... but I think it's something that is rather... expected for CLP students... I was so happy to not have to read anymore after the exams that for the first time in my life... I actually stopped reading for quite a while.

I guess it's just a rather normal reaction when you face something over and over again that to the point you're just inured to it and you just sort of block it out.

Could be anything. Words; arguments... Especially arguments. When fighting becomes the norm, I think you just develop this apathy to it and everything pretty much just doesn't matter.

So best thing is just to let things regain its balance, eh? Soon... hopefully.

Harry Potter Shocker

Posted by eirene83 at 01:51 AM on July 22, 2007 in HP.

With every HP fan looking forward to this day, it's quite a shocker finding that some of the major bookstores in Malaysia could actually decide to not go ahead with the sales... because Carrefour and Tesco advertised a selling price of RM69.90...

I thought we had a free market free? And as far as I know, books weren't exactly considered a controlled price item. So the way I see it, these bookstores' behaviour is actually just pretty childish. Not all that much different from playground behaviour.

Someone else is selling it for much cheaper... So let's refuse to sell them altogether. And make everyone buy them from the hypermarkets... I suppose this will make sense to someone who has studied economics, but to me, this just looks like downright silly behaviour.

Harry Potter & The Deathly Hallows

Posted by eirene83 at 11:40 PM on July 26, 2007 in HP.

Well now. After all that big hoo-haa about malls only opening at 5am to sell the books promptly at 7.01am (00:01, UK) and figuring that everyone's gonna be up at the crack of dawn to secure themselves a copy and it'll surely be sold out... I strolled into a Carrefour outlet sometime past lunch... and grabbed one from the stack that was still lying around.

Well!

So much for pre-ordering or joining the rabid crowd at the crack of dawn! No need for all that fuss and I still managed to get a copy! At a 40% discount too!

Though it would have been so much nicer if I was still in the UK... Since apparently Asda, Morrisons and Tesco is selling it for around £5 to £6... That's like RM35 to RM42... compared to the Malaysian RRP of RM69.90 to RM109.90... Do the math.

Of course, after all that... I still can't read the book after my damned exams. Bleh.

Joy Cafe, Happy Garden

The food at Joy Cafe is absolutely delicious. I haven't come across any kopitiam in KL that actually serve steamed bread. The taste... MMmmm, just like home! (I'm serious. It reminds me of school holidays as a kid when this was all I needed to get through a day of playing!)

Interior of Joy Cafe: Cooling, relaxing and neat...

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket
From upper left clockwise, Siamese Laksa; Joy Special nasi lemak; Hainanese Chicken chop; Braised pork ribs with noodle soup

All recipes were home tried and tested and frankly, it's a change from all the usual Madam Kwan/ Little Penang/ Kluang Station/ et al type fare. My favourite were the Hainanese chicken chop (tastes so much like what my aunt makes!) and the braised pork ribs... Tasty tasty!

And if you don't feel like eating... Well, the drink menu doesn't disappoint either!

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket
Upper left clockwise: Ice chocolate; French toast; lychee ice-blend; lime & sour plum ice-blend; Joy ice white blackcurrant coffee

Their flavoured coffee is pretty interesting. Smooth, aromatic and really really cooling. I tried the blackcurrant coffee and it reminded me so much of eating grape Sugus... If you're no fan of coffee, no worries. Their chocolate; hot, ice or blended, is rich enough to rival that of Coffee Bean and the likes.
And if you're looking for something different, try their lychee ice-blended: Strong taste of lychee without being sickly sweet with just a hint of milk. Something unusual but delicious.

I could go on and on... but I'd rather you not take my word for it and try for yourselves! The food's quality-controlled so you can rest assured that everything on the menu is consistently good... and they're apparently in the process of adding more things to the menu as well. Go give it a visit!

Ice-cream

Posted by eirene83 at 01:34 PM on July 28, 2007.

Yay for ice-cream!!!

Now that I'm free to wander around and do whatever I like, I find myself with this craving for ice-cream... Something different; something good... And find myself wishing that I was back in Sheffield so that I could indulge in a triple scoop of Thorton's ice-cream.

So deliciously rich, not too sweet and a small variety of flavours, which believe it or not, is actually a good thing since I won't get a headache trying to match flavours... So good that it's the only time I'll willingly use the word "sinful" to describe it.

I can still remember the taste of their dark chocolate; the mint; the strawberry; the lemon meringue; the chocolate orange Seville... Heaven melting on my tongue...

Or strolling around Rome or Venice and going for a triple scoop of gelati (Yea, when I indulge, I really indulge. Go overboard )...

Unfortunately, Baskin Robbins, Häagen-Dazs, Lecka Lecka don't really inspire me... I want something different. Maybe it's finally time to try Matthias Patisserie & Confiserie in Bangsar...

Harry Potter: The End

Posted by eirene83 at 03:31 AM on July 31, 2007 in HP.

Well... That's it. The wait is finally over (along with the boycott) and long-held breathes let out and around the world, Potter fans are putting down the last instalments (or just picking them up after an entire week of itchy, twitchy anticipation and fear the some idiotic friend will insist on spoiling the whole thing for them [Yep Steffi, talking about you here ]).

I finished the book in 2 days and well... I feel that after the disappointment that was Order of the Phoenix and the utter crap that was Half-Blood Prince, Rowling has finally redeemed herself and not made me want to hurl the book out the window in impatience or at the end of it, put down the book and go "What the fuck was that all about???"...

She tied up all the loose ends that annoyed me for the past few books... Though she still didn't explain the whole deal with Potter, Dumbledore and Petunia... And overall, it wasn't too bad... Felt a lot like a fanfic but let's ignore that... And I have a bone to pick with the way she swishes and flicks and bam, drops dead another character...

It's one thing to get rid of characters so you don't have to explain so much at the end... But another thing entirely when you spare a sentence only in doing it... And I think she could have done without the last chapter altogether...

But still, although not quite worth the RM69.90... at least it wasn't such a rip-off like Half-Blood Prince was... And now, let's see how the fan-fictioners deal with this material.

Maybe it's to do with the fact I'm on holiday... Maybe because I've been clearing my room of old junk... but whatever the reason, I find myself craving food that I used to eat as a kid...

French toast with loads of sugar the way my mom used to make for me. Chicken chop served with ketchup, onions and peas... Steak the way Chinese places would serve it... Waffles at A & W... Happy Meals at McD's...

I also notice that the above foods all involved a lot of starch and calories! Maybe I just associate those food with happy times! a.k.a post-exam period!

Good? Bad? Stupid? Impractical? Useful? Flawed?

Well, I don't know about you but it's apparently a good 300m over to MV from the LRT station... That's a pretty far distance to walk after a whole day of shopping and lugging groceries... Unless they provide travellators... And even then it's an iffy idea... The mass of people descending on Abdullah Hukum to get over to MV... Will it be able to handle the traffic?

Still, if the idea works out... it'll be a good way to get to MV during sale days when traffic is insane and parking is impossible... Especially with the Gardens opening in September!

Mooncake

Posted by eirene83 at 04:41 AM on July 31, 2007.

If you haven't actually noticed, kiosks are starting to be set up around malls decorated with lanterns and heaped down with boxes of mooncakes... And it's a good 2 months till the Mid-Autumn festival!

It seems the starting period for selling mooncakes varies from year to year; sometimes shops only sell them a month in advance; usually it can be as early as 2 months ahead (Same thing for yee sang come CNY).

I remember being incredibly fascinated by the concept of ice-cream mooncakes when they first came out; either Swensen's or Häagen-Dazs, can't remember which. I know they're just ice-cream but I guess it was just the novelty of it. I also remember being incredibly turned off by the price. RM13 onwards for a mooncake?? Daylight robbery! This was back when mooncakes were ranged around RM5 to RM8...

NOW though... The cheapest mooncake on the market is about RM6 and goes all the way up to RM10 and above, depending on filling. And suddenly RM13 per mooncake doesn't seem so bad anymore. Too bad I got over the novelty of it and am happier trying the novely mooncakes shops come up with now: Sambal mooncakes! BBQ chicken! Sakura! Tiramisu!

Though of course in the end, I'll still stick to my favourites of green tea, durian, mixed nuts and pandan.
