Boo!

Posted by eirene83 at 10:33 PM on March 1, 2007.

Hahaha from a random tagging session on Eng's blog, we finally organised a yum cha session and met up after 12 freaking years!! Hehehe... Time really flies... Thanks to technology and how convenient it is to actually keep in touch with someone, I never realised that it's been so long since we actually talked face to face.

But anyhow, it was good meeting him, Chun How and Richard... And also Steffi added the usual funny touch! Also kinda realised just how little SSPians we're all still in touch with and how many of us were actually not in Malaysia. But it was still pretty good fun...

Hehehe, sorry ah Eng... I left so early... Next time promise, I'll stay longer... and see which other SSPian is around, so can drag them along too!

Ordinary Miracle

Posted by eirene83 at 10:34 PM on March 1, 2007 in Music - Songs & Lyrics, Personal as a favorite post.

Imagine someone to love who loves you
Imagine to look in her eyes and see
Imagine how miraculous it seems to be,
but it's not so very rare
You can find it anywhere

It's an ordinary miracle.
The kind you find around you every single day
or maybe it's just seasonal like spring and May.
They´re so many.

The ordinary miracle.
A common kind of miracle that runs right by
or maybe it's too gradual to catch your eye
so you miss it.

A sudden bolt of distant lightning.
Cathedrals rising out of stone.
A baby starts to walk and talk one day
then, shockingly, he's grown
and in love.

That volcano of emotions
not ten thousand gypsy-potions
can undo.

Yes, it's love
Well, of course my view is slanted,
but people do take love for granted.
Sad, but true.

Of all the many miracles.
Mysterious and marvellous and big and small.
When people fall in love it really beats them all.
Oh, to see it,
to feel it,
to know it

Imagine someone to love who loves you.
Imagine to look in her eyes and see.
Imagine how extraordinary it would be
if an ordinary miracle
happened to me

Kushiel's Scion and Kushiel's Justice (It's a trilogy, but not sure what the last book is called...)
All four books by Jacqueline Carey...

Baker's Edge! The one baking pan that creates edge pieces when you bake. I don't know about the rest of you, but my favourite part of any brownie, cookie, cake or even kuih is the edge... Unfortunately it's only available in the US and the price of international delivery is about the same as the price of the pan itself!! ($32.50!!... which brings it close to a total of $62.50!!!)

There's other stuff I want to get too, but these are the few I've been saving up to buy since last year!

Hehehe I just realised I've been posting a lot of lyrics lately... Looks like I'm running out of things to blog about... plus what with the CNY and all, I haven't had much chance to do any cooking or baking since the house is pretty much packed with the usual CNY goodies! Quite troublesome since with so much food, no one will have much appetite to spare for my food. >.<

Ah well... Just have to finish the goodies first before I can resume any baking!

Woot!

I just realised... I've actually lost a lot of weight! LOL, which is good!! I actually didn't realise it until I looked at a couple of photos I took recently and went like, "Dammnnn... I can actually see my chin... and dimples(!!) again...!! My god, my chin looks so sharp!"...

Hahaha... gosh, the last time my facial features were like that was when I was an overworked, underpaid, starving sales assistant for 3 months back in 2002... Yay! I can see my dimples again!

So dammit Eng, no spare tyres!!! >.<

Now to improve my complexion! Hehehe...

p/s: did I promise photos to anyone but forgot to send them? If yes, well er... hehe, yea, I forgot. Drop me a line or sms to remind me? Thanks

(Crying Over) Spilt Potions

Summary:
The 'real' reason why it's important to always wash your hands after handling strange potions!

Couldn't decide what fic to recommend for this week. Not that I don't have any on hand; there's loads... but I just wanted a short little happy type fic and most of the ones I had didn't quite fit that bill. Anyhow, this is short, relatively... and a little funny and really sweet. Happy ending too!

We can never see ourselves as others see us; even the mirror shows us in reverse...

For the longest time, that used to be my signature on Hotmail... and I reckon it's pretty true... Early on in Fruits Basket, there was once when Tohru was talking to Kyo and she said this:

The part of a person that's remarkable is like the umeboshi (pickled plum) on the back of a rice ball. All around the world, there are different colours, shapes, and flavours but because it's stuck to the back, they might not be able to see their precious umeboshi. 'I'm not special,' each one would think, 'just plain ol rice.' Even though that's not true, and there is an umeboshi on the back. The reason people get jealous of one another is because they can see the umeboshi on other people's backs. Even now, someone might be feeling envious of something you don't recognize in yourself.

(You have to read Furuba to understand, really)

Lol... Anyway, this is how I see myself... I wonder how differently do you see me?

Cendol Agar-agar

Posted by eirene83 at 12:53 AM on March 6, 2007 in Recipes.

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

Ingredients:

25g agar-agar strips
200g brown sugar
1 liter water
500ml santan
3 pandan leaves
350g cendol, well-drained

  1. Put water, sugar, agar-agar and pandan leaves in a saucepan and bring to a boil over medium heat until sugar and agar-agar have dissolved completely. Discard pandan leaves.
  2. Stir in coconut milk and bring to a boil, then remove from heat.
  3. Pour the jelly mixture straight into mould, add the cendol and stir lightly to mix. Leave aside to cool completely.

My mom and I have been trying out different agar-agar recipes lately... It's actually pretty fun, and much easier than baking... Less hassle. This recipe turned out pretty okay, taste-wise... but I'm not sure if it's due to the agar-agar strips or what, but the texture is rather soft compared to the firmer texture we get from using agar-agar powder... So I also couldn't manipulate the fish too much to take a picture of it without a really high chance of it crumbling to bits.

Also, the unfortunate combination of using the fish moulding we have (can't get any other designs here... Though apparently Singapore sells a lot of fantastic jelly moulds according to our neighbour) and cendol... well, made it look rather as though the fish is infested with worms... A rather icky image actually... >.<

But aside from the soft texture and the rather... ew... image, the recipe's not too bad. We might try this again but using agar-agar powder just to see if it'll improve things. Otherwise, pretty yummy!

Giving The Male Species a Bad Name

Posted by eirene83 at 12:54 AM on March 6, 2007 in Personal.

This is not a slam against all men... I've come across many many guys and I personally think that most of them are pretty decent, thoughtful, etc people...

But then, once in a while, I meet someone who makes me cringe and feel bad for all guys out there because said person is really really just making all guys out there look bad.

This guy is also the same so-called 'friend' who thought I was a man that I was referring to. I'm sorry but telling a girl you're trying to pick up that your first impression of her was that you thought she was a guy and adding that she looks really lady-like now... is NOT some incredibly fantastic compliment. Frankly it's down-right insulting and just gives me the suspicion that you're either gay and need a cover... or that you're secretly into transvestites. (No, this is not a slur against transvestites, okay, so don't flame me.)

This is also the same guy whose calls and texts I've been ignoring and can even ask me to please illustrate what I mean... when I told him, "I. Am. NOT. Interested."...

The same guy who after realising I'm ignoring him... has been calling from other phone numbers... and pretending to be someone else, ie giving a false name! I can recognise your voice, you bloody asshole!! You're not being smart! You're just making yourself look horrible, disgusting and despicable!

Frankly... there's persistence, determination, stubbornness.... and there's just plain, incredibly, mind-bogglingly stupid, dense and giving all guys out there a bad name. I'm sorry if I seem harsh... but frankly, I have all but told him to FUCK OFF... and he still doesn't get it.

ARRGGGHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Siren

Posted by eirene83 at 09:39 PM on March 8, 2007 in Personal.

I guess everyone pretty much knows the meaning of the name 'Michelle' (If you're one of those who don't... go Google it.)... but well, well, well... according to Nicholas... I have the effect of a Siren. No, not that alarm kind of siren... The Greek myth Siren...

So what do I know about Sirens? Part woman and part bird... though some legends depicted them as mermaids... (Is it Germany? I think it was...) with beautiful faces or voices... and generally known for luring men to their deaths.

Oh joy, Nicholas... I hope you meant it in a nice way...

But anyway seriously... in most of the legends I've encountered, Sirens are generally known to be seductive, enticing, beautiful either in face or voice... and yea, men are supposed to be drawn to them. Okaayyy, I really doubt that I actually have that effect on men! Really!

...

But I'll say this much... I seem to recall telling guys that they shouldn't like me because it can be... dangerous for them... Lol, so does that actually make me a Siren then?

Kahlua Cake

Posted by eirene83 at 02:10 AM on March 11, 2007 in Recipes.

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Recipe from The Candied Quince

Ingredients:

1 cup butter, room temperature
2 cups sugar
4 eggs, separated
3 cups all-purpose flour
3 tsp baking powder
1/4 tsp salt
1 cup orange juice
1/4 cup Kahlua
1/2 cup chocolate syrup

  1. Preheat oven to 180oC. Grease and flour a 10 inch tube or Bundt pan.
  2. Beat butter and sugar until soft and fluffy. Add egg yolks one at a time, mixing well between additions.
  3. Sift together dry ingredients. Add to butter mixture alternating with orange juice, beginning and ending with dry ingredients.
  4. In a clean bowl, beat egg whites until stiff. Fold gently into batter. Divide batter in half. To one half, add the Kahlua mixture. Pour batters into pan, alternating light and dark batters.
  5. Swirl gently with a knife to marble and bake for about 1 hour, until a cake tester comes out clean.

I was discussing with my mom some ideas for my birthday cake (Yep, I'm planning to bake my own cake this year not that I'll turn down a store-bought cake... Hehe, one can never have too many cakes, I say.) when she asked why not I try making a Kahlua cake. Yea, my family has something for alcohol in their baked goods... So I thought, why not?

So I looked around for a recipe to follow. And looked and looked. Because it was almost impossible to find one that wasn't cake mix-based... not that I have anything against cake mix... but I just like making things from scratch. I had some ideas of what to do, but I thought it'd be nice to have a recipe to follow... and well, turns out my ideas weren't so off actually.

There's actually a lot of recipes that turned off but I rejected them because they used cake mix... or used vodka as well (Kinda like a Black Russian)... or used too little Kahlua. Some only used Kahlua in the ganache but I had already done that for my mom's birthday cake. And so... this was the only recipe I liked the best...

So anyway... tis not too bad. Moist, not too crumbly and great hint of Kahlua... though I actually prefer the previous marble cake I made, the double chocolate chip one... You can't really taste the orange juice actually nor the chocolate syrup... Well still, it's a Kahlua cake. So my mom got what she wanted!

And noo, not quite death by chocolate... but I'm getting there!

An Itch To Scratch

Posted by eirene83 at 04:48 AM on March 13, 2007.

Yeap... The itch is back and I really really need to scratch it. The baking itch, that is.

Most of the CNY goodies have about nearly finished so it's pretty safe for me to whip out my baking trays (or pans) and mixer... Problem is wondering where to start... I've accumulated so many recipes that I want to try that I don't know what to bake.

Probably something chocolatey... For one thing, I got in a fresh supply of chocolate chips so yes, the itch there to break into it ... For another, I really really feel like having something chocolatey. About as intensely chocolatey as the chocolate cookies I made before. Death by chocolate!!!

Or something like that.

We'll see what happens tomorrow!

Konnyaku Jelly

Posted by eirene83 at 11:15 PM on March 14, 2007 in Recipes.

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Ingredients:

1 packet konnyaku powder
Water
Canned fruits

  1. Combine powder and water (follow the instructions on the packet) in a pot and stir over flame until boiling.
  2. Dump canned fruits into mould and pour the jelly into the mould and let cool.

Whee, actually my first time making konnyaku jelly... Lol, actually the instructions are pretty redundant since every packet of powder comes with it, but just for fun.. Plus also something for people to follow if they want to.

It was pretty easy and fun making this... Plus also done in no time at all with minimal washing up to do. I only used half a packet of powder, which was enough to make 2 fishes... Though between my mom and I, we finished 1 fish by dinnertime... Hehehe... Nice and chewy, much better than the usual jelly you get using agar-agar strips.

I still remember when konnyaku first came to Malaysia, there was this kiosk at Mid Valley that sold them at RM1 per piece... Robbery! But still loads of people bought them, coz it was something new and different... But that craze didn't last long... and now most people make it at home anyway.

Portuguese Egg Tart

Posted by eirene83 at 03:34 AM on March 15, 2007 in Recipes.

Recipe taken from Su-Yin

Ingredients:

4 tbps castor sugar
3 egg yolks, beaten
1/4 cup full cream milk
1/4 cup whipping cream
1 sheet puff pastry

  1. Whisk egg yolks and sugar until combined.
  2. Gradually whisk in milk and cream over medium heat until mixture boils and thickens.
  3. Pour milk mixture slowly into the egg yolks.
  4. Cut the puff pastry in half and stack together. Roll up tightly and cut into 12 1cm rounds.
  5. Lay pastry cut-side up and roll each round into a 10cm wide circle.
  6. Press into greased muffin tray and fill with custard.
  7. Bake at 180oC for 20-25 minutes or until golden brown.

Pretty easy to make... but I overcooked the bloody custard... SO! Take them out when they're still jiggly!! Otherwise the taste was pretty similiar... But the brown specks I usually associate with Portuguese egg tarts were missing... Think I whisked the sugar too well so it didn't really caramelise.

Anyway... no photos... coz I don't have a camera at the moment. But suffice to say, they look nothing like Su-Yin's. Will have to try again... soon. Once I finish this batch... coz I can't bear to throw them away... Oh well...

Sacrifice

Posted by eirene83 at 03:53 AM on March 20, 2007 in Thoughts, Personal.

Not a very coherent post... Extremely tired and brain-dead but just wanted to post about this before going to bed...

I was just thinking. When a person sacrifices or gives up something, they don't normally tell the whole world, or if they're in a relationship, it's not the norm to go, "You know... I had this chance... but I gave it up... because of you." I mean, it makes it sound so... selfish? Or like you're looking for praise or affirmation that you did the right thing?

I mean, it's like... giving something up should be voluntarily so I would assume there's no need to bring it to the notice of others the thing you did/did not do. Jeez my thoughts are so disjointed... Have no idea how to word what I want to say...

/mental struggle

I guess what I'm trying to say is... what you feel when you give something up for someone... Yeah, there's that whole bullshit about doing things for yourself, but c'mon seriously speaking... We're humans. We're usually motivated by something or someone when we make a decision. I mean, do people feel this happy, inner peace thingy when they give up something that they feel is the right thing to give up? Should that be the 'normal' thing to feel?

So, in question... would it mean you're insincere or selfish when you feel a tinge of regret, sadness, wistfulness, whatever... when there's something offered to you that you really want... but you turn away from it because as much as you want it, you know it's not right? Or does that just make you human, and in fact, make the sacrifice all the more meaningful... Because you really wanted it and it hurt to give it up... yet you still managed to?

I probably made a mess of this post... Been really exhausted this few days and I can't quite get my thoughts together to get my question across... But anyway, that's my question:

If you had to turn away from something you really wanted... for whatever motivation... yet you can't stop thinking about it and feel sad/wistful or regret and still somehow wish you could go do it... does it mean you weren't sincere in giving it up? Or just make it all the more... meaningful? Because you wanted it and you still want it and can't stop thinking about it... but you still don't do it.

/gives up mental struggle and goes to bed.

Oooh this should be fun... An announcement from the principal today regarding the 'security' and admittance into college...

Instead of getting us to give our names at the entrance to class like we normally do... or swiping our ID cards like other colleges do... they've apparently decided to do something much much more high-tech.

Thumb print scan.

How cool is that????

Nooo, they couldn't stick with something conventional and easy... Nope, they have to do something that requires getting thumb scans from all of us (and that means not just CLP but oh say, A-Levels, LLB, ICSA, and every other course counducted...), linking it to the system and setting everything up.

They couldn't just install a system and get us to swipe our cards as we go in. Nope, thumb print scans it had to be.

And actually, that's apparently pretty tame. My lecturer nearly wanted to get retinal scans.

God, am I in Law school here or some spy academy?

10 Items Or Less...

Posted by eirene83 at 05:33 PM on March 21, 2007.

Hmm interesting.

Apparently if you live in Malaysia long enough, you really do end up acting like a Malaysian.

I tend to go for the express lane when paying since I usually just need to pick up a few items... and this being Malaysia, you come across people who apparently can't read, ie being Malaysian... and still insist on being in that lane despite having a mountain of goods and usually the cashier will just let them be.

Well today, I came across another shopper like that... a Caucasian... who insisted strongly that the cashier just treat a dozen carton of yoghurt as just one item... because it's the same item, only 12 of them, so the cashier only needed to scan it once.

/rolls eyes

I've seen enough of instances like this that frankly I don't give a damn anymore... but what was surprising was the cashier insisting back the said shopper go to another aisle because that was the correct procedure.

For The Love Of God...

Posted by eirene83 at 03:28 AM on March 22, 2007 in Personal.

Ye gawds people....

I appreciate your comments, truly I do... But frankly, after looking through them and getting calls from not one, but two concerned friends... just allow me to clarify:

Yes, the post on sacrifice is personal.... but not so bloody freaking personal to the extent as though it becomes a question of my doubts, identity, life-death-and-the-great-beyond!!!!!!!!

Like I said, I was sleepy when I wrote that so I probably worded it badly and perhaps it came across less light-hearted than what I wanted... so my bad there. My choice of words probably gave you all the impression that I was talking about some major life-changing sacrifice (eg, Nicholas and his giving up culinary arts for multimedia or the mysterious homer and his whole happiness/meaning question) BUT. IT. WASN'T! I was just talking about your playful, day-to-day, giving up of something.

I appreciate your concern, your thoughts and opinions and you taking the time to comment. But really. STOP!

And yes people, I know I'm being overly touchy and sensitive about this... but frankly, the whole post is being taken way too seriously and blown out of proportion and I think it's time to stop the whole debate.

Okay whoever you are... I don't know if it is the same person but really, thank you again, this time for sending me The Sundering... but as I said previously, it's kinda creeping me out.

I know whoever you are, you read my blog... and you know my home address.... because see, not that many people actually have my address... and I have only mentioned here on my blog that I was planning to buy those books.

So, why are you keeping your identity a secret?

Increased Parking Rates

Posted by eirene83 at 10:35 PM on March 22, 2007.

I was planning to blog about this for some time but it kept slipping my mind... If anyone of you have been to MV lately... can you believe they're actually going to implement that ridiculous new parking rates???

RM1 for the first 3 hours, then another RM1 for every subsequent hour and a maximum of RM7 the whole day! And that's just for weekday!

Bloody hell!!! That's about on par with what you pay to get into KLCC!!

What the heck?? 3 hours! Even OU allows 6 hours before imposing the subsequent hour charge!

So now it's like... you can shop... or you can watch a movie... but not do both without having to pay more for parking. Bloody hell!! If this is MV's management's way of dealing with the lack of parking space and the huge amount of traffic that goes there... I would have to say they probably succeeded. I'd rather get my mom to drop and pick me up instead of driving there. -_-

HP Fic of the Week

Posted by eirene83 at 03:59 AM on March 26, 2007 in HP.

Surrender The Grey
By: Emma Grant

Summary:
Draco Malfoy returns to London after five years of self-imposed exile to start a new life with Harry. But will the secrets of the past destroy everything they've worked for?

***

The sequel to last week's recommended fic, Left My Heart... Again, another novel-length fic, it answers the questions that was left hanging and also clears up a lot of questions... A wonderful piece of work...

Sometimes, even when you have something that's utterly beautiful and precious... sometimes... it's just not enough when the past refuses to remain the past and rears its ugly head.
Sometimes, it'll take all your faith, hope and love to keep hanging on; to not run away and just stay forever. Even when there's no promises... and sometimes, that's all it takes and it'll be enough.

Kahlua Cheesecake

Ingredients:

Brownie base:

1 stick butter
4 oz unsweetened chocolate
1 1/2 cup sugar
2 eggs
1/2 cup milk
1 cup flour
1/2 tsp salt

  1. Melt the chocolate and butter in a saucepan and leave to cool.
  2. Add sugar and eggs, stirring well after each addition.
  3. Blend in milk. Stir in flour and salt, mixing until just blended.
  4. Bake for 25 minutes at 190oC. Remove cake from oven.

Topping:

2 lbs cream cheese
3/4 cup sugar
2 eggs
1/4 cup strong coffee
1/4 cup Kahlua

  1. Beat cream cheese with mixer until light and fluffy.
  2. Gradually add sugar and mix well.
  3. Add eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition.
  4. Stir in coffee and Kahlua.
  5. Pour into prepared pan on top of brownie base.
  6. Bake for 40 minutes at 220oC, remove cake and leave to cool before chilling for a few hours.

I'm a little tired of the usual digestive crumb base on my cheesecakes, so I decided to do a brownie base instead. And it's actually pretty good! Not too sweet, for one... which is a good thing because I keep forgetting. Kahlua. Is. SWEET!! So the cheese topping turned out a bit too sweet for my family's liking...

But that aside, I quite like this recipe. Not too cheesy but coffee taste wasn't too strong either... Which can be either a good or bad thing, depending. I would have preferred a stronger taste... Will have to figure out how without turning the whole thing to cheesesoup!!

Otherwise, it went pretty well with the brownie base and sweetness aside, it wasn't too rich either... or dense. I would say it's a pretty okay first attempt though I'm still not quite happy about it. Weellll, there's always next time!

Who says there's no such thing as a free lunch??

There certainly is when you've got a pet sister as great as mine! Thanks, Mars, for the early-birthday lunch! I had heaps fun, the food was good and it's definitely excellent meeting up with you!

I'll definitely be heading back to Ms Read soon... I like the service, the ambience is really cosy (cushions!! Cushions galore!! ), and there's something about the menu that appeals to me. Not just the variety of food... but rather, the menu itself and the way it's done. Yuummm!!!

Chewy Brownies

Ingredients:

250g butter, room temperature
350g chocolate
3 eggs
150g sugar
220g cake flour
150g walnuts

  1. Melt the butter and chocolate together and leave to cool.
  2. Beat the eggs with sugar until fluffy. Stir in the chocolate mixture.
  3. Fold in the flour and walnuts.
  4. Bake for 25 minutes at 180oC.

Success!!! Nice chewy moist brownies! I made 2 small batches; one with nuts and one without and both turned out pretty good. I also sprinkled some cinnamon powder into the batter before baking but the taste kinda disappeared after the brownies cooled.

Anyhow this is a pretty good recipe. Not too much sugar but still it might seem a bit too sweet for those who don't have much of a sweet tooth. Sweetness aside the texture is pretty nice; not too cakey or crumbly but rather nicely chewy and toothsome! Me likey!!!

Happy Birthday!
